Red dots and LPVOs solve overlapping problems in different ways. A red dot is fast, light and simple. An LPVO adds magnification and precision at the cost of weight, money and a more demanding eye box. The right answer depends on the distances you shoot.

How each optic works
A red dot projects an illuminated aiming point onto a lens with no magnification. Both eyes stay open, the dot floats on the target and there is effectively no eye relief requirement.
An LPVO is a traditional variable scope with a bottom end near 1x. At 1x it behaves somewhat like a red dot; dialled up it gives you 4x to 10x for identification and precision.
Speed and close quarters
Inside 50 yards a red dot is generally faster. There is no eye box to find and no magnification to manage.
A good LPVO at true 1x closes much of that gap, but it still requires more consistent head position.

Distance and target identification
Magnification is the LPVO's advantage. Identifying a target, calling shots and engaging past 200 yards all get easier with glass.
A magnifier behind a red dot is a middle path: it adds 3x on demand while keeping the dot's simplicity, at some cost in weight and clutter.

Weight, battery and cost
A red dot plus mount is typically 5-10 ounces with battery life measured in years. An LPVO plus mount often runs 20-30 ounces and relies on illumination only for the reticle center.
Budget matters here. A quality red dot costs far less than a quality LPVO, and a poor LPVO is worse than a good red dot in almost every way.
